Let’s be honest, everyone wants to be the best in their field. And while recruiting seems to be easy when looking from the outside in, we know it isn’t that simple. It’s a challenge to match the best person for a job, and doing it quickly is even harder. So how do you get to be the best? By concentrating on the three areas that we’ve found to be the most important traits of any great recruiter.
A Focus on Quality Vs. Quantity
A personal touch is always the way to go to get the best candidates.
- Dig deeper and learn about candidates so you know just as much about them as you know about the job. This helps you build and maintain your reputation. It also fosters a good rapport and trust with candidates.
- Constantly pay attention to detail. The big picture might look more important, but if you can’t keep track of the little things, you could be letting the best candidates slip through the cracks.
- Keep in touch with your candidates to maintain a good relationship, and update their profiles regularly. Not knowing their most recent accomplishments reflects badly on you, and could block them from great jobs.
Good Communication Skills
Being online is all about how you write, since that’s all people will see. Once it’s on the internet, it’s there forever. No take backs allowed here.
- Be clear and concise. No one wants to read long-winded and boring emails. They need things kept short and sweet. Try to cover all the necessary details in as few sentences as possible. Your candidates will thank you, and so will your skyrocketing success rate.
- Answer your candidate’s emails promptly, even if there’s no news to share. If they don’t hear from you in a reasonable amount of time, they could take it to mean that you aren’t invested in getting them hired and look elsewhere.
- Stay in touch with candidates even outside of hiring opportunities, so they know they’re still on your mind and that you’re keeping an eye out for any jobs that might suit them.
- Cultivate the ability to give good and bad news. You can’t avoid or delay giving bad news, and you need to be sincere in giving either type.
- Take advantage of any teaching moments from both sides (instructing and learning) to keep yourself and your candidates up-to-date.
- Use the appropriate style and level of language for your candidates, especially since working online means all communication is textual, and people can go back and reread everything you send. Be respectful, friendly, and watch for spelling and grammar mistakes -- being sloppy helps no one.
A Knack for Staying Organized
Being disorganized makes your job -- and life -- twice as hard. A messy desk could mean a messy mind, and that could spell disaster. So get rid of the clutter, both mentally and physically.
- Stay on top of searching through candidates before they pile up. This will actually save you time in the long run since you’ll already know who the best are and have their contact info on hand.
- Keep track of all of your social media and email communications. Since social media is generated so fast, you need to constantly be aware of what people are saying.
- Stay current on trends and developments in your areas of expertise to be proactive and forward-thinking. This way, you’ll know what’s coming and can find the best candidates now for those future job postings.
Working remotely can be tricky, especially as a recruiter. Hopefully, these tips will help improve your focus and keep you motivated. Remember to create clear goals for each day, which will help keep you on task and on track to becoming a superstar recruiter.
